Home satellite broadband installation

Installation

Installation is carried out by a local firm appointed by the Satellite Broadband Service Provider

Overview:
Installing a home satellite system typically involves placing a satellite dish outside your property, connecting it to a modem, and aligning it with the satellite network in the sky. Here’s what you can expect:

Equipment Provided:
– Satellite dish: Mounted on a pole, roof, or wall, with a clear view of the southern sky.
– Modem: Connects the dish to your home network.
– Wiring: Includes cables to link the dish to the modem inside your home.

The Installation Process:
1. Dish Placement: A technician will visit your property and choose an installation site with minimal obstructions like trees or buildings.
2. Mounting: The dish is securely attached to the wall, roof, or a standalone pole.
3. Alignment: The dish is aligned precisely to communicate with the satellite orbiting above the Earth.
4. Connection: The technician will run a cable from the dish to your modem, which provides the internet inside your home.

Authorization and Activation:
The satellite dish’s unique ID is paired with your service account. The technician activates the connection by ensuring the modem communicates correctly with the satellite, verifying signal strength, and authorizing service through the provider.

Time Required:
Most installations take 2–3 hours, depending on the location and mounting complexity.

Satellite Dish

Every Installation requires a Satellite Dish to be precisely mounted for optimal signal strength and Maximum Bandwidth. This is the responsibility of the Installer.

Satellite Dish Attributes:
Antenna Size:
Ranges from 60cm to over 1m in diameter for higher capacity connections.
Low-Noise Block Converter (LNB):
The LNB at the dish’s focus converts satellite signals into data for your modem.
Mounts and Stabilizers:
To handle UK weather, dishes use weatherproof materials and secure mounting systems.

Installation Steps:
Site Survey:
A line-of-sight check ensures the dish has an unobstructed view toward the satellite.
Obstruction maps or compass tools may be used to confirm clear skies.
Mounting the Dish:
Installers ensure the mount is level and secured with bolts.
Polar mounts may be used for motorized dishes in multi-satellite systems.
Alignment:
Using a signal meter or specialized software, the dish is aligned to the satellite’s orbital position (e.g., a geostationary satellite at 28.2°E).
Alignment involves fine-tuning azimuth (horizontal), elevation (vertical), and skew (rotation of the LNB).
Cable Routing:
RG6 or better coaxial cables are connected between the LNB and the modem.
Weatherproofing ensures durability for outdoor cables.

Network Authorization:
The satellite network uses the dish’s unique MAC or IP address.
When powered on, the modem initiates a “handshake” with the satellite and exchanges authentication keys.
The dish and modem pair with the satellite beam covering your geographic area.

Testing:
Signal strength, latency, and download/upload speeds are tested to ensure the connection meets the service’s specifications.

Connection

The Satellite Provider Network Centre authorises one or more of  their Satellites in orbit to provide your system with an agreed datastream

Unique Identifiers:
Each satellite dish or modem has a unique identifier (such as a MAC address or a pairing code) registered with the satellite network provider.

Beam Coverage:
The satellite divides the Earth into beams (geographic regions). When the dish aligns with the satellite, it connects to the specific beam covering the user’s area.

Handshake Protocol:
The modem communicates with the satellite via encrypted signals.
Authentication involves verifying the subscriber’s credentials and checking for active subscriptions.

Network Authorization:
Once authenticated, the satellite grants access, allocates bandwidth, and begins routing data between the user’s modem and the internet.
